Round 1
Join yarn with a dc in any corner, chain 2, dc. Work 1 dc into each of the next 10 stitches and then work a dc2tog over the final stitch in the corner and the 1st stitch of the octagon which will be the 1st stitch in the corner of the octagon.
Octagon
For each octagon work 1 dc into the corner space, skip the first stitch, then work 1 dc into each of the next 23 stitches, with the final dc worked into the first stitch of the next corner space.
At each join between an octagon and a triangle, work a dc2tog over the final stitch of the octagon and the first stitch of the triangle.
Stitch count per octagon: 24 dc.
Triangle
Work 16 dc across the first half of the triangle, 1 dc into the centre circle, then 16 dc across the second half.
Where the triangle joins an octagon, work a dc2tog over the final stitch of the triangle and the first stitch of the octagon. This is the stitch that already contains the joining dc worked as part of the octagon.
Stitch count per triangle: 32 dc, plus 1 dc2tog at each join.

4 octagons: 96 dc
3 triangles: 96 dc
1 corner piece: 11 dc
8 dc2tog: 8 stitches
Total: 211 stitches per side, plus 1 ch-2 corner space.
Round 2
Join yarn in any corner space with a standing tc, 1 tc in the same corner space, ch 2, 2 tc in the same corner space. Skip the next stitch, then work 1 tc into each of the next 212 stitches. Repeat sequence around all four sides, joining to the first standing tr at the end of the round with a slip stitch.
Stitch count: 214 tc along each side.
Round 3
Join into any corner space with a standing tc, ch 2, tc in the same corner space. Ch 1, skip the first stitch, *2tctog in the next stitch, skip the next stitch. Repeat from * along the side. Repeat around all four sides, working the same corner pattern in each corner.
Stitch count: 106 2tctog, 107 ch-1 spaces, and 4 corners of 1 tc, ch 2, 1 tc.
Round 4
Join into any corner space with a standing dc, ch 2, dc in the same corner space. Dc into each of the next 215 stitches. Repeat around all four sides, working the same corner pattern in each corner.
Stitch count: 215 dc on each side; 4 corners of 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc.
Round 5
Join into any corner space with a standing htc, ch 2, htc in the same corner space. Htc into each of the next 215 stitches. Repeat around all four sides, working the same corner pattern in each corner.
Stitch count: 217 stitches on each side; 4 corners of 1 htc, ch 2, 1 htc.
Round 6
oin into any corner space with a standing htc, ch 2, htc in the same corner space. Work 1 htc into the third loop of each of the next 217 stitches. Repeat around all four sides, working the same corner pattern in each corner.
Stitch count: 219 stitches on each side.
You can repeat from round 2 to round 6 as many times as you desire to make a thicker border.
